If you visit our office during these difficult times, rest assured that your health and well-being are important to us and our team. That’s why infection control procedures are in place at our office.

Our office has newly installed air filtration systems and our team only allows one patient at a time in the office. We will text patients to come to the front door when we are ready and have disinfectants in plain view for them to use. All surfaces such as the dental chair, light, drawer handles, and countertops have been disinfected. We also cover some of our equipment with protective covers, which are replaced after each patient.

All members of our dental team are required to use protective gear such as gloves, masks, gowns, and eyewear. Once a procedure is completed with one patient, gloves and masks are thrown away. Everyone on the team washes their hands and puts on a new pair of gloves before seeing the next patient.

During these times of worry regarding COVID-19, it is important to do everything you can to boost your immune system. Taking better care of your mouth will give you a better immune system. Enjoying a proper diet with essential nutrients helps to avoid diseases and chronic health conditions. A diet that is low in sugar will make it easier for your mouth to make less decay-causing plaque. Plaque is a byproduct of bacteria in your mouth and sugars in your foods and drinks. It’s also what leads to tooth decay and gum disease.

           Preventative Dental Care

If you currently have gum disease or are susceptible, you should brush and floss more to reduce symptoms. The American Dental Association recommends brushing and flossing twice a day. If you have an autoimmune disease or diabetes, you should brush more often than this. You should also be seeing your dentist at least 2 times a year, if not every 3-4 months. Regular dentist visits can help keep your oral health in better check to reduce your immune system problems. Better oral health can lead to a significantly better immune system.

Missing dental appointments due to phobias not only can prolong your dental discomfort, but it can also add to your anxiety because you may feel guilty for missing dental offices.

Here are some tips and tricks that will help you relax so you can get the care you need.

            1.

           Talk With Your Dentist

Having an open dialogue with your dentist can help you. Dentists understand that people have phobias about being at the dentist because they’ve helped other people like you.

            2.

           Chill Out with Music

Bring your music and headphones for your appointment. Music is especially useful if one of your specific anxiety triggers is the sound of the dental office. You may need to listen for directions from the dentist or team, so keep the volume at a reasonable level.

            3.

           Meditate into Tranquility

There are some great meditation apps where you can learn how to put yourself into a more relaxed state. The great thing about this is that it can help you with more than just your dental anxiety.

            4.

           Imagine Your Happy Place

This visualization technique can seem overly simple, but sometimes simplicity is just what you need. Just close your eyes, and imagine the one place in the world that makes you feel the most at ease. Imagine the park, the beach at sunset, or another scene in your mind and pretend you are there.

            5.

           Sedation Options

When being open with your dentist, listening to music, visualization, or mediation doesn’t help your dental anxiety; it’s time to consider sedation dentistry. Often with sedation dentistry, you’ll be relaxed enough that the dentist can provide you with the necessary treatments, and they can accomplish more in one appointment to prevent having to prolong how long the full treatment plan will take. It can be easier to know you have one significant appointment rather than several smaller appointments.

          Chewing Your Nails

This nervous habit can chip teeth and impact your jaw. Placing your jaw in a protruding position for long periods of time can place pressure on it, which is associated with jaw dysfunction.

Solution: Stress reduction and holding something to keep your fingers busy if certain situations are triggering.

           Brushing Too Hard

Brushing with a hard toothbrush, or brushing too hard, can damage your teeth and irritate your gums.

Solution: Use a soft toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Acceptance at the proper pressure. Don’t think ‘scrub’ think ‘massage’.

           Grinding and Clenching

Grinding and clenching cause muscle tenderness and joint pain, not to mention chipping and cracking of the teeth.

Solution: A mouthguard at night can help along with relaxation exercises and staying aware. You will have less pain, soreness and tooth damage.

           Chewing Ice Cubes

Most of the time the ice will break when crushed between your teeth, but sometimes the tooth or a filling will break.

Solution: Drink chilled beverages without ice, or use a straw so you’re not tempted. The pleasure that comes from chewing ice is not as great as the risk of chewing it and breaking a tooth.

           Using Your Teeth As Tools

Your teeth are not a pair of scissors, they are for eating. You put your teeth at risk for cracking or injuring your jaw when you use them as tools.

Solution: Stop and find something or someone to give you a hand. Your mouth will thank you.

         1. “It doesn’t matter what time of day I brush.”

Brushing at certain times of the day does have an impact on your oral health. Brushing your teeth at night prevents food particles from sitting on our teeth which contributes to tooth decay over time. Brushing teeth in the morning fights bad breath and decay. It is recommended that you brush right after consuming foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates to prevent cavities.

         2. “Diet sodas are okay to drink because they don’t have sugar in them.”

The acid in diet soda eats away at enamel which can cause tooth sensitivity. Some people tend to slowly sip their sodas throughout the day, which is actually more hazardous. The bacteria in your mouth begins to work with the acid from the soda and attacks your enamel. Other beverages like orange juice can cause similar damage. The best alternative is water, vegetable juice and milk.

         3. “You only need to go to the dentist if your teeth hurt.”

You might be aware of the saying “prevention is better than cure.” What is relatively less heard of is that diagnosing and curing a tooth problem at an earlier stage is much easier and more cost-effective than if it were to be addressed later. Altogether, prevention saves you both time and money in the long-run.

         4. “Oral health is not connected to the rest of the body.”

There are many correlations between your mouth and body. Tooth decay and periodontal disease can cause bacteria to enter the bloodstream and cause other issues in your body.

Studies show there is a link between periodontal disease, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and more.

Be Proactive About Your Dental Care

Dr. Dalia Perez Salinas in Pinole encourages you to seek preventative care to keep your teeth healthy. Putting off regular dental check-ups will likely lead to problems. A little time dedicated to caring for your teeth each day can save you time and money in the future.

Whatever your December festivities look like, Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas wants to make sure you keep your oral health a priority even during all the holiday hustle and bustle. This time of year is actually an ideal time to schedule one of your bi-annual dental check-ups and here are some reasons why!

           Winter Travel Plans

            – If you plan on taking a winter vacation, coordinating one of your bi-annual dental visits with your trip will allow for you to voice any concerns you might have, and Dr. Perez-Salinas can look for any signs of issues that could interrupt your get away. Not getting a check-up before your vacation can allow problems to go undiagnosed and lead to bigger, more complicated dental emergency that could ruin travel plans.

            – If your body is busy fighting dental issues – even small cavities – your immune system can become compromised. Keeping up to date on regular dental visits and cleanings from Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas, will help ensure your immune system is ready to keep you healthy during this flu season. If you find yourself battling a sickness this season chances are you taking over the counter medicines or cough drops. These remedies commonly contain large amounts of high fructose corn syrup which can have very damaging effects on your tooth enamel. Make sure that part of your healing and recovery routine includes keeping your oral health a priority.

The holidays are filled with lots of laughter over shared meals with the people you love and with so much to be thankful for this time of year, your oral health should one of them! Here are some delicious fall indulgences that both your mouth and your Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas will thank you for!

           Know Your Seasonal Fruits

          – Fall produces some delicious seasonal fruits, like pears, persimmons and apples, to name just a few. These fruits are high in fiber, and their crispy, crunchy bite help naturally clean plaque from teeth while they’re being chewed. These raw treats are packed full of healthy vitamins which makes them a great source of nutrients for teeth and gums, so adding fresh fruits to your slice of pie can allow you to indulge a little while keeping your oral health a priority. These fruits are naturally sweet, so consider introducing them as an alternative to more sugar-filled or processed and packaged dessert options.

Pumpkin Is The Season’s Healthiest Craze

          – As trendy as pumpkin-spiced-

is this time of year, Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas recommends avoiding the artificial flavors and indulging in the real deal. Pumpkin is a nutritionally rich seasonal superfood, packed with oral health benefits. This veggie is filled with mouth-friendly nutrients like iron, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin C and zinc. The versatility of pumpkin makes it a great addition to both sweet and savory recipes while boosting the nutritional value of the meal.

Choose Nuts and Seeds This Harvest Season

          – This time of year offers a large variety of nuts and seeds to snack on. Crunchy snacks like this are great for oral health because they natural scrub your teeth and tongue of any plaque and debris. Roasting Pumpkin seeds is a seasonal tradition and a great way to get essential vitamins and nutrients, like calcium and iron, that help your teeth stay strong.

Our team has no problem celebrating Halloween all month long, but the one thing Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas suggests putting off the longest is buying the candy. Keeping bite size candies out of the home or office for as long as possible will mean you will have less temptation. Halloween is technically only one day a year, but if you want to celebrate sooner, do so without the sugar. The more sugars you eat, the more damage it can cause to your tooth enamel, ultimately leaving you defenseless to cavities.

Did you know one medium (grande) Pumpkin Spice Latte has 50 grams of sugar, 380 calories and 52 grams of carbs? That’s almost 50% of the suggested carbohydrates for a day and

the amount of sugar in one cup! If you can’t say no to your annual PSL treat there are simple ways to cut the calories and sugar:

Order only 2 pumps of pumpkin syrup (half the normal amount) and save 15 grams of sugar

Save around 70 calories by passing on the whip cream

Order a small (short) instead of a medium (grande) to cut out 170 calories

Boooo At The Guilt Trip, Celebrate!

There are plenty of ways to celebrate Halloween by including healthy versions of your favorite treats, like warm cider made with real apples and spiced cinnamon sticks, or adding fiber packed pureed pumpkin to your pancake mix. Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas avoids dried fruits, as they contain much more sugar than raw fruits, and they are sticky and sugary on teeth. And feel free to indulge a little with some dark chocolate.

           Yes! Eat the chocolate!

The higher the cocoa content, or the darker the chocolate, the better. If you can’t find the time to brush your teeth after your chocolate treat, make sure to rinse your mouth with water to help remove excess sugar or debri that could harm your tooth enamel.

Plaque is the primary cause of gum disease and bacteria found in plaque produce toxins or poisons that irritate the gums. They may cause them to turn red, swell, and bleed easily. Plaque can also harden into a rough, porous substance known as calculus –

. This can occur both above and below the gum line. As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this leads to tooth and bone loss. Your Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas and their dedicated staff will make sure you leave their office with plaque and tartar free teeth and the knowledge and tools to help keep your smile disease free.

No one ever plans on having a dental emergency, especially while on vacation! Whether you are traveling for fun or for work it’s important to know what you can do if one pops up on your itinerary. Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas has some tips that can ensure you are prepared for common dental accidents.

             Research:

Any small accident or issue can develop into an emergency if left untreated, so your first step in preparing for potential dental travel emergencies is to research the area for local same-day or emergency dentists, should your require urgent care.

            Toothache:

A toothache is often a sign of infection in or around a tooth and is a very common dental emergency. Make sure to pack some Tylenol or aspirin to help in comforting the pain. If the pain becomes severe, lasts for longer than 24 hours or if you see signs of swelling, contact a local emergency dentist promptly.

            Chipped or fractured tooth:

After a tooth is chipped or cracked rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to combat potential swelling. If you break a tooth you should eat only soft foods and try to avoid food and drink that are hot and cold to the touch for the remained of your trip. If the fracture is painful or if swelling lasts longer than 24 hours contact a local urgent care dentist.

            Adult tooth falls out:

If a permanent adult tooth is knocked out you will need to go directly to an emergency dentist. While in route try to place the tooth back in place and hold it there. If that’s not impossible, take care to not touch the root of the dislodged tooth and put the tooth in a container of milk or water if milk is not available. The likelihood of saving the tooth decreases after about 30 minutes so immediate response is crucial.

            Tongue or lip laceration:

Biting or lacerating your tongue or lip may cause inflammation and possible bleeding. Use ice or pressure to control the swelling or bleeding, and any swelling should subside within twenty-four hours. If bleeding or swelling persists or pain is severe contact a local emergency dentist immediately.

Most importantly, visit Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas before your trip! Coordinating one of your bi-annual dental visits with your travel plans will allow for you to voice any concerns you might have, and Dr. Perez-Salinas can look for any signs of issues that could interrupt your plans. Not getting a check-up before your trip can allow problems to go undiagnosed and lead to bigger, more complicated dental emergency that could ruin travel plans.

This year get the mother figure in your life a gift that shows them how much you love their smile! Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas has a couple suggestions that will promote oral health that they will love.

           A Reusable Straw

A reusable straw is an inexpensive way to help support oral health and our environment. Using straws helps protect your tooth enamel from the negative effects caused by sugars, acids or syrups found in many beverages . Having a plastic free and reusable utensil helps eliminate plastic pollution threatening our oceans and aquatic friends.

           A Healthy Dessert

Spoil them with treats that will satisfy their sweet tooth and won’t compromise their oral health. Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas suggest fresh berries, because they packed with vitamin C and fiber. But if candy is a must, pass on hard candies and chewy taffies and choose chocolates instead! Chocolate dissolves fast, minimizing the amount of time it stays on teeth.

           An Electric Toothbrush

Give them a gift of perfectly clean teeth everyday. Some clinical studies have shown that an electric toothbrush removes plaque from your teeth and gums 21% more effectively than manual brushing. If you choose to gift them a new electric toothbrush, Pinole dentists Dr. Perez-Salinas suggests making sure the brush is round, and has an oscillating head. Plus an electric brush with a 1 or 2 minute timer can be helpful to ensure they are brushing for the appropriate amount of time, everytime.

A Convenient Travel Size Oral Health Kit

Put together an small kit of everyday essentials like sugar free gum, floss, and a travel toothbrush. This is an easy way to show you care about their health and want to help make their daily routine easier.

With veneers, there is no reason to put up with gaps between your teeth, teeth that are stained, badly shaped, or crooked. A veneer placed on top of your teeth can correct these maladies, simply and quickly and help you achieve a beautiful smile! The ultra-thin porcelain veneers are virtually undetectable and highly resistant to coffee, tea, or even cigarette stains. Porcelain Veneers can also last well over a decade.

Pinole cosmetic dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas can offer dental crowns for patients who have teeth that need more protection and reinforcement than a filling can provide. Think of a dental crown as a way to protect a badly damaged tooth, a kind of armor for weakened enamel. A crown may also be used for cosmetic reasons to hide flaws like chips, cracks, or discoloration.

A full range of cosmetic dentistry is available to Pinole cosmetic dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas’ patients, including professional teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is the #1 requested and performed cosmetic dental procedure. Teeth whitening is a procedure that brightens teeth and helps to remove stains and discoloration.

           Tooth Colored Fillings:

There are many advantages to tooth-colored fillings; mainly that the color matches the rest of your teeth but also these types of restorations strengthen your teeth. Resin onlays are bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth. Pinole cosmetic dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas uses restorations like this in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost.

A super bowl party is a time gather up your friends and family and watch the game, comment on the crazy commercials, and chow down while watching the halftime performance.

Whether you are hosting or attending a party to watch the big game this year Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas suggests trying these foods to help maintain your oral health this season.

Cheese helps lower the pH in your mouth, which will neutralize acids caused by consumption of other foods. That means reducing the risk of dental decay while you enjoying appetizer boards… yes please! Additionally, cheese is full of essential nutrients like calcium and protein, so every bite is another step towards optimum dental health.

Pinole dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas suggests choosing foods with fiber that help scrub away buildup and plaque on your teeth like apples, celery, and carrots. These types of snacks are an easy finger food, great for dipping and full of vitamins unlike greasy chips, or carb defense crackers.

Avoid fried foods and fill up on things like nuts and seeds. Nuts are full of calcium and proteins that strengthen your teeth and benefit your overall health as well.

Choosing these snacks is a great way to keep your Superbowl Sunday healthier, but don’t forget to bring your water bottle! Water aids in keeping your mouth clean by stimulating saliva production, and washing away food debris that can be harmful for tooth enamel.

The new year marks a new start, and is a great time to set resolutions! You would be surprised at all the benefits improving your oral health routine can have on your daily life and overall wellness. Here are some of Pinole Dentist Dr. Perez-Salinas’ top oral health tips that can help improve your daily health in 2019:

           Watch What You Eat

Eating crunchy veggies helps you naturally combat plaque, and provide vitamins and nutrients that are great for your overall health. Apples, Celery, and Carrots are some healthy snacks with fiber that help scrub away buildup and plaque on your teeth.

           Drink More Water

Choosing water over juices or sodas will cut out a big cavity causing culprit – sugar – as well as cut down your daily caloric intake. Eliminating as much sugar in your diet as possible can help ensure a cavity free 2019 and have some slimming effects as well! Water also aids in keeping your mouth clean by stimulating saliva production, and washing away food debris that can be harmful for tooth enamel.
